As I Think About Watching an Yvonne Rainer film onVHS

I plan to go home and watch an old rare copy of Yvonne Rainer’s, The Man Who Envied Women later tonight.  I looked up the film to find that almost all of her feature length work is on IMDB. The reviews really reflect what makes Rainer’s work continually fascinating. I found only six reviews. Two for each of three films. One review glowing, and the other scathing. The films continue to inspire controversy and push personal envelopes for viewers. Here are the headlines for all six. No in-between reviews. In fact all of the reviews had either 0-1 stars or 8-10 stars.

The Man Who Envied Women

Very funny movie, if you like feminist deconstruction

Most painful movie I’ve ever had to sit through

Film About a Woman Who

One of the most important films for feminist film theory and 60s/70s cinema

one of the worst films ever made

Journeys From Berlin/1971

Beauty in Film

like a bad film school project
